Tonya J. Turner chairs the education and training committee for Rainbow Response. She is currently an Assistant Attorney in the Domestic Violence Unit at the Office of the Attorney General in the District of Columbia. Previously, Tonya served as the Director of Legal Services at Break the Cycle, overseeing all legal services, supervising staff attorneys and providing direct legal services to young victims of domestic and sexual violence. In her position at Break the Cycle, Tonya also trained Metropolitan Police Department Officers and adult service providers about domestic violence laws that impact teens and how to better help young people experiencing abuse.
She has provided substantive knowledge and skills training with such programs as the American Bar Association’s Commission on Domestic Violence Custody Institute and serving on the advisory board for Show Me Love DC, an education and outreach campaign promoting healthy relationships in the LGBT community. Tonya currently serves on the Leadership Council for the Victims Assistance Network (VAN), a collaboration of victim services providers in D.C. coordinated by the Office of Victims Services, as well as the board of directors for the DC Center for the LGBT Community. She received her undergraduate degree from Howard University and her advanced degree from Rutgers School of Law.
